This is a very interesting post. I love the way that Jesus said (paraphrasing)-if two or three of you are gathered in my name I will be among you.
I didn’t know about oral law vs written law. It’s beyond good that the Apostles had the Holy Spirit guiding them as to what to say at the Jerusalem conference, as they were able to stand up to the Pharisees.
Just on a personal note Martin, how do you keep the Sabbath on a Saturday, when our culture calls for it to be on Sunday?
Indeed God can guide us in as small a group as two or three gathered together led by the Spirit of God. It is a personal relationship with God, rather than a national covenant, although God always sort individual relationship with people in Israel, and gave them his Spirit also, which is evident when you do a word search on Spirit in the Old Covenant.
At the Jerusalem conference it was not just the Apostles but the elders and all the church who were involved in the discussion, which is the example for us today. Acts 15:22-23
The Oral Law was and still is a very big issue with the Jews, and yet most Christians simply don't get it when Christ spoke about the traditions of the Elders, and "the law of Moses" which is often shorthand for the Oral Law.
The Catholic Church changed the day of worship from the Sabbath to Sunday, but they did not change the Sabbath, they still recognize that the Sabbath is the seventh day, they just claim that the Sabbath is for the Jews only, whereas Sunday is for Christians.
They claim this changed with the Apostles, but there is nothing in scripture about this supposed change.
They changed the day of worship to Sunday in 325AD at the Council of Nicaea.
All other Sunday keeping churches came out of the Catholics and continue to follow their traditions.
we however must obey God rather than man:
"This people draws near to Me with their mouth, and honours Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. But in vain they worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." (Matt 15:8-9)
The Catholic's and all Sunday keeping churches are very like the Pharisees, they worship God on their own terms and claim God's support, but scripture does not back them up.
God however has never changed His day of worship, as you have most probably seen in my posts on the Sabbath;
Thanks for your detailed reply Martin. I’ve got to say I’m thankful to not be catholic! But this sounds self righteous, I don’t mean for it to be. It’s just that the Catholic Church has so many mysterious (to me) protocols, I think some are a bit over the top. I’ve been to a few Catholic weddings, and not known what they are doing where the bride and groom are!
Yes the Catholic Church is a bit of a mystery to say the least to non Catholics, like myself, but it is also a mystery to those brought up in it too, as my wife was!
The Catholics actually love a mystery- starting with the Trinity which they call a mystery.
It's all based on mystery, as is Babylon- Rev 17:5!
Keep it hidden and you keep the power with the elite, but God's way is to have a personal relationship with individuals through the power of his Spirit, and for the knowledge of him to fill the Earth!
Despite this we can't judge if some in it are sincere or not, as I am reminded of Samaria, which was a gentile region near Israel and had a mix of worshiping God and pagan gods, (2Kings 17:24-41) yet Christ spent 2 days with the Samaritans and many believed on him. (John 4:1-42) Samaria was also the first gentile region to receive the Gospel,(Acts 1:8, Acts 8) even before Peter had the vision and met with Cornelius. (Acts 10)
God also calls people out of Babylon (Rev 18:4), so perhaps some Christians are in the Catholic Church?

The Sabbath is the seventh day, the Catholics admit this in their own info: https://www.catholic.com/qa/did-the-early-church-move-the-sabbath-from-saturday-to-sunday

As far as keeping the Sabbath in todays society goes, it sometimes can be difficult but it is what God expects
